Prevention and Preparedness

Stay safe when it’s hot!

Check on friends and neighbors, especially those who don’t have air conditioning, are over 65, are living alone and/or with a chronic illness.

Stay cool and hydrated

  • Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty
  • Avoid working and exercising outside, if possible
  • Take cool showers or baths
  • Close curtains or blinds during the day
  • If your home is too hot, go to an air-conditioned space like a library, shopping mall or cooling center. (Call 211 for cooling center locations and transportation options.)
  • Never leave kids or pets in cars

Clackamas County Cooling Centers

Daytime and nighttime cooling centers open when the National Weather Service declares that the region will be under a Heat Advisory, Watch, or Warning. This triggers overnight cooling shelter when the advisory, watch or warning extends to the hours between 8pm and 8am. Cooling shelters may also be activated when weather conditions do not meet the criteria above after consultation and approval by either the Clackamas County Social Services Division Director or Program Manager.

  • For a central number to get information about shelters, transportation or other resources, call 211.
  • To sign up for text alerts for critical, emergency announcements from the county, opt-in to Public Alerts.
  • See more tips on how to keep yourself, family, neighbors and pets safe during summertime weather.

Shelters will also be activated when the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaches the “Unhealthy” level due to fire or other emergency. Shelters may also be opened on an as-needed basis for wildfire evacuations.
