PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES

Call to Order

 

          The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm.

 

Roll Call:

 

Present:  Chair Steve Guilliams, Cm. Dennis Dahrens, Cm. Zoe Miller, Cm. Dianna Turk, Cm. Lisa Homan, Cm. Matt Soots, Cm. Tim Arnold.

 

Absent:  Cr. Becky Arnold.

 

 

Approve March 28, 2007 Minutes. 

 

Cm. Miller moved to approve the minutes as presented, Cm. Arnold seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

 

 

City Council Liaison Report:

 

 Cr. Arnold was absent, no report. 

 

 

Citizen’s Concerns & Comments:

         

Eagle Creek Troop 1181 asked the Commission permission to build a bench for Wade Creek Park to fulfill their Bronze award in order to bridge to cadet status.  The Troop answered questions from the Commission and discussed the logistics of the project.  The Commission agreed that this was a great idea.  The Commissioners thanked Eagle Creek Troop 1181 for attending the meeting.

 

Cadet Troop 1831 asked the Commission permission to make picnic tables for Wade Creek Park to fulfill their Silver award.  The three troop members explained that they need 40 hours each of community service and 120 hours total to receive the award.  The Commission liked the idea and thanked the girls for attending.  The Commission invited both troops to the P & R Open House on May 29th.

 

 

 

Commission Business:

 

Metal Detector Event:  Cm. Homan commented that things are moving right along and discussed the logistics of the event.

 

The Commission discussed ideas for auctioning off a piece of art at the silent auction at the Metal Detector Event.

 

 

Wade Creek Park Update:  Chair Guilliams announced that the Commission will be holding a Wade Creek Park Open House on May 29th at 7pm in the old library at City Hall.

 

Cm. Miller asked if Dave Piper could come the next P & R meeting on May 23rd to get everyone up to speed.

 

Cm. Turk informed the Commission that she has been talking to Phil Lingelbach about grant ideas.  It was decided that he will work on writing the applications for the big grants and Cm. Turk will work on the small ones.  She discussed the requirements of the grant application she is currently filling out.

 

Cm. Arnold informed the Commission that Kay Uhlig would like to donate $500 toward a bench in honor of Mike Uhlig.

 

 

Earth Day:  The Commissioners discussed the logistics of the Earth Day event to take place on April 28th from 9am – 1pm at Wade Creek Park.  It was decided that those who are going to be there will show up at 8am to set up.

 

Citizen’s Concerns & Comments

         

          There were none.

 

Commission Report & Comments

 

          Cm. Soots is pleased about the emails going around about the boat event

          and thinks the Earth Day event sounds neat; he is sorry he can’t be at the

          event.

 

Cm. Miller informed the Commission that she spoke at the Chamber lunch meeting and handed out flyers and color renderings of the park.  She explained what she talked about at the meeting.

 

Cm. Miller talked about the Wade Creek Park writing project.  She informed the Commission that the schools are finishing up and she will pick up their papers so the Commissioners can read them and pick the winners from each class.  It was decided that the group will meet on May 8th to read over the papers.  Cm. Dahrens will build birdhouses for the top 3 winners to hang in the park. 

 

Cm. Homan commented that Cm. Miller did a wonderful job at the Chamber lunch.  She talked to business owners about the park and they are going to help. 

 

Cm. Homan announced that she is resigning from the Chamber Board, so that she can completely focus on the Park. 

 

Cm. Dahrens apologized for not being at the last meeting.  He encourages everyone to continue sending emails to keep everyone notified about what is going on.

 

Chair Guilliams commented on people missing meetings, and asked that when someone is going to be absent that they please call him or Sadie and let them know.  He informed the Commission that someone called about an event at PGE Park to sponsor called “Patriot Riders” but hasn’t heard from her again.  

 

Cm. Arnold apologized for slacking on his P & R duties.  He is now only taking one class, so he’ll be able to focus more on the Commission.  He would like to look into taking a class on grant writing.

 

Chair Guilliams is really happy with the anonymous donation to the Park.
