Approval of Minutes

The September and October minutes were read and approved with a few small corrections.  Jami will see that Traci receives the updated versions of both.

Financial Statement

Mauragrace brought an updated financial report and stated the balance at present was $6,203.97.

Public Input

Steven Amick read a proposal for the commission to help sponsor an art project he is heading up called “Art for All.”  This project will provide works of art and/or art supplies to people who might otherwise not be able to afford them.  These gifts would be included with this years Adopt-A-Family program through the Estacada Resource Center.  The commission agreed to help sponsor this wonderful project in any capacity it could.

OLD BUSINESS

East End Project

Paula Nelson and Lisa Galluzzo from the Estacada Development Association (EDA) shared the landscape design for the East End Project (the “Goodwill truck” area of Estacada).  The design showed a parking lot, sidewalks, greenways, rock walls with benches, a large gazebo/pavilion and a kiosk.  The kiosk will be a showcase for listing local businesses.  The EDA would like assistance from the commission in getting art created and displayed – primarily regarding pavilion.  Ideas ranged from the actual creating of the pavilion by hand-carved timbers or having art incorporated into an already-built pavilion.  The EDA also wants a large “Welcome to Estacada” sign to be created.  The commission suggested the EDA outline exactly what they would like to have with a budget and then create RFPs for this project.  It was agreed that the commission would help however possible and be a liaison with the art community.  Jane said she’d be on the lookout for any possible grants.

Centennial Arts Project Update

Tabled as Lesley was not present.

Library 1%  for Art

Angel stated that there was not a lot of new information to report.  It was still planned to release a new RFP and Jami will email to all local artists.

Arts & Culture Series

Jami stated that the Chautauqua Series, “The Witch’s Garden,” was set for April 14 in the Community Room at the Whispering Pines.  The Springwater Grange was secured for Writer’s Night on April 28th, but she was still waiting to hear back from Stevan Allred.  She sent in a usage application for the Auditorium for “Vortex” on January 20 and is still waiting to hear back although she doesn’t anticipate any problems.  Steven Amick stated the Matt Love (author of the book “Vortex”) and Lee Meyer, Chief Organizer and Media Liaison for Vortex, would both be attending the event for questions/answers.   The following events will all take place at the Auditorium: PAGE will hold a film festival on Dec. 17, Misty River will perform Feb. 10, PAGE will perform their One Acts on Feb. 24 – 26, and DoJump will perform on March 17.

Community Outreach

Estacada Tourism Meeting:  Mauragrace attended the Estacada Tourism meeting and reported that there were two ongoing projects at present.  The first is the Kiosk near the water treatment area.  They will be updating this with new information and she will try to get the mural information included.  Also the 3-panel signage near the Timber Park restrooms has one panel empty and she feels our information would be great to have displayed there as well.  Mauragrace will also be working on getting $1K of the tourism monies for the printing of the mural brochures and volunteering herself.  Thank you, Mauragrace!

Art & Cultural Exchange:  Jane reminded us about the countywide Arts & Cultural Exchange put on by the Arts Action Alliance of Clackamas County is to be held Tuesday Nov. 15 at the Museum of the Oregon Territory from 8:30 to 2:30 pm.   Mayor Austin has been invited to be part of the opening panel, which is addressing how the arts are affecting change in our communities. Another major focus of the day will be “creative spaces” in our communities – identifying existing facilities that can be used for the arts across Clackamas County.  Jane, Jami, Gloria and Mauragrace all plan on attending and Jane will be speaking as well.

Mural Art Walk: Jane also reported that Mary Cooper is very interested in being involved in the commission’s “Mural Art Walk” for local area students.  This art walk idea evolved from a recent commission retreat meeting.  The idea is to have local students, teachers, and parents, walk to perhaps 4 of the murals and the commission would have Mary Cooper, a local arts educator, create a curriculum involving the murals and have the students participate.  Mary would like one of the artists involved, Kolieha Bush, to assist.  Kolieha has happily agreed to help.  The next step is to have Jane, Angel, Mary and Kolieha meet to work on getting this started.

Oregon Education Act of the 21st Century:  Jane reported that the Oregon Legislature and Board of Education is reviewing the Oregon Education Act for the 21st Century. Currently, diploma requirement in Oregon’s public schools require only one credit in the fine or applied arts (which includes woodworking, welding, etc) or foreign language.  They are taking public comments at this time (until Dec. 16) and the Oregon Alliance for Arts Education is asking that the arts community take action to make meaningful changes. Go to the survey posted on the Board of Ed’s site (http://www.ode.state.or.us/search/results/?id=144) and in the comment section, request that two credits in Fine Arts be required of all students receiving an Oregon diploma. (Fine arts consists of music, visual arts, theatre, dance and moving image arts.)

NEW BUSINESS

Who’s Who in the Arts

Mauragrace made up a chart explaining the differences between the Arts Commission, the Summer Celebration, the Artback, and the Spiral Gallery Cooperative.  The commission has been aware of the public’s confusion as to who is who and what they each do for some time now.  To address this issue, Jami gave Steven Amick the chart and asked him if he would be interested in writing an article for the local paper incorporating the chart to clarify “Who’s Who in the Arts in Estacada.”

New Commissioner Position

Tabled due to time constraints.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35 pm.

The next meeting will be held December 7th, 2005.

Respectfully submitted,
