Approval of Minutes

Copies of the September minutes were not available but were emailed to commissioners.  They will be read and voted on at the November meeting.

Financial Statement

Mauragrace reported that there were just a couple of leftover Summer Celebration expenditures to be paid and that she would have a full statement available at the next meeting.

Mail

Mauragrace reported that the Arts Commission received so far three applications for the 1% for Art.

Public Input

Steven Amick attended the recent Arts Action Alliance meeting and reported that one of their goals was to provide life-long learning in the arts to the general public, and art for non-consumers needed to be emphasized.  Steven is heading up a pilot project – it is the beginning stages so it has no name as yet – and it will basically be getting art and art supplies (i.e., books, cds, art supplies, music, etc.) to the people who can’t afford it.  His goal is to get these items donated and work with the Family Resource Center’s Adopt-A-Family Christmas program to get these items to the people who are using their resources.

OLD BUSINESS

Summer Celebration

Jane reported the highlights of the last meeting including the decision to make Sunday an all day event as well and that the artist vendors would be juried.  Also, Pete Hamer will be taking over Kate Bast’s position as she is moving out of town.  Jane also reminded us that our next Summer Celebration meeting would be November 8 at 6:30 pm at Jami’s house.

Centennial Arts Project Update

Lesley will be meeting with Randy Ealy tomorrow regarding the brass circles for the completion of this project.  She showed the commission three of her completed designs. She will be checking with the local museum people and others to get ideas for the last three designs.

1%  for Art

Angel wrote a press release for the Estacada News, which was published last week.  Hopefully, it will be in the Oregonian tomorrow as well.  Jane suggested sending it to RACC and the Clackamas County Arts Action Alliance.  The proposals are due October 19th.  Lesley reported that she distributed these to the gallery artists as well.

Spring Arts & Culture Series

Jami stated she was waiting for the dates that Estacada Together would be using the Auditorium.  Jane reported on those and that Estacada Together was looking to bring one or more of the following: DoJump, Oregon Shakespeare, and Misty River.

The commission discussed which events they’d like to see take place this year.  They included: “Vortex” the movie, a writer’s night, a theatre performance, and four events from the Chautauqua catalog.

Steven Amick knows the key people behind the “Vortex” movie and will contact and report to Jami on the availability of one or more of them speaking at the movie.  Angel will ask about utilizing the gym at the Clackamas River Elementary as a venue.  Jane will call Jami before the end of the week regarding the final dates from Estacada Together.  Jami will proceed with contacting the Chautauqua performers and report back.

Community Outreach

Mauragrace attended the Estacada Tourism meeting and reported that one of their main goals at present is to improve the area of land where the Goodwill truck is parked.  The goal is to have a mini-park in that area with a “Welcome” sign and perhaps a Park-n-Ride area as well.  The City of Estacada has approved the $30,000 in-kind request.  ODOT will perform the surveying of the area and has waived it’s $10,000 fee.  At this time, the Estacada Tourism group has $15,000 of in-kind donations toward its goal.  Their next meeting will be held on Oct. 19th and Mauragrace will attend and report back.

There is a new group in Estacada called the “Estacada Area Community Events.”  They have invited and would like an arts commissioner to join their board.  Mauragrace will attend their next meeting to find out more about the group and their mission and will report back to us at our next meeting.

Jane reported that the Arts Action Alliance of Clackamas County was planning a county-wide cultural forum to be held Tuesday Nov. 15 at the Museum of the Oregon Territory. Mayor Austin has been invited to be part of the opening panel, which is addressing how the arts are affecting change in our communities. Another major focus of the day will be “creative spaces” in our communities – identifying existing facilities that can be used for the arts across Clackamas County.

NEW BUSINESS

Jeni Shilman tendered her resignation stating her personal life is too busy at this time to do the position justice.  She will, however, stay on as Volunteer Coordinator for the Summer Celebration.

Steven Amick reported that he is looking for avenues and outlets (i.e., art publications, etc.) to help promote artists in the local area since retiring as a writer from the Oregonian.  The commission is thrilled to have him as an “honorary” arts commissioner as he is willing to assist the local community and us in promoting the arts.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.

The next meeting will be held November 2, 2005.

Respectfully submitted,

Jami Berry, Secretary
