Minutes

The copy of July’s meeting minutes were read and approved.

Financial Report

The financial report was reviewed.  Jane noted that there was a mistaken charge for sound equipment posted to the Arts Commission’s account, but she has spoken to Traci about removing it.

OLD BUSINESS

Auditorium Update

Jane reported that “The Trail Band” would be the first event for the grand re-opening of the auditorium.  It will take place on September 20 at 7:30 pm.  Adult tickets are $15.00 and children/students/seniors at $12.00.  Debbie Anderson is currently managing the facility, coordinating events and taking care of the publicity.  Suzanne agreed to talk with Debbie about the Commission’s interest in using the facility during our Arts and Lectures series between January and April.

Centennial Mural

Katinka wrote the first draft of a letter to City Council about the mural and will be emailing commissioners a copy for comments.

Summer Celebration & Updated Job Descriptions

Next year’s Summer Celebration will take place July 23-25.  It was agreed that we couldn’t wait until October to get started for next year’s event.  The first Summer Celebration meeting will be held at Barbara’s on Wednesday, September 17, at 6:30 pm.  It will basically cover grant deadlines and fundraising.  Miriam agreed to take on the task of making the Commission a large 2-5 year calendar with grant deadlines filled in.  Jami agreed to update scrapbook and make copies of pertinent articles for Katinka for grant writing purposes.  Jane reminded us about the updating of our job descriptions for next year’s celebration.  We agreed to have our descriptions ready for next meeting.

1% for Art Ordinance

This subject came up at the recent community meetings for the new library, and when the architects asked the attendees about having art in the library, a loud roar of enthusiasm erupted. Katinka explained the public art policy that is now in place and talked about a percent for art ordinance the commission hopes to bring before the City Council next spring.  Katinka will ask attendees of the recent meetings for letters of support.

Policies and Goals

Katinka stated we should think about policy and procedure guidelines for the future.  Katinka will send Alice Norris (current mayor and former Arts Commissioner of Oregon City) for a copy of their guidelines.

Arts & Lectures Series

Jane brought a copy of the Oregon Council of the Humanities’ Chautauqua Series. Mary Bywater Cross is still listed and we agreed that it was important to have her come to speak in collaboration with the local Skip-A-Week quilters as it was cancelled last year due to her illness.  It was agreed that a film series at the auditorium would be quite popular and will be discussed further at the next Summer Celebration meeting to get a head start on this project.  We also discussed having two other events, perhaps involving writing and/or audience participation.

NEW BUSINESS

Planning Visioning Meeting with Cheryl Snow

Jane agreed to contact Cheryl for a date, hopefully for October.

Donation to Artback

The Commission discussed a donation to Artback to show our support of their wonderful efforts in our community. It was noted that the Arts Commission paid for color ink cartridges for their brochure, but couldn’t donate money to Artback or other organizations, as we were not a granting entity.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Jami Berry, Secretary
