Estacada Arts
Commission
Minutes
July 11, 2001
Attending: Ellen Radcliffe, Gloria Polzin, Norma Piper, Jane Reid, Barbara Mattson, and guests Alicia Charlton and Nina Bradford
Meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m.
Minutes were accepted as corrected.
Update to Summer Celebration: Alicia Charlton, event coordinator, reported all was coming together well, though volunteers to tear down tents and transport bleachers were still needed. Commissioners created a list of people for Jane Troeh, volunteer coordinator, to contact. Jane asked about renting a tent to shade attendees since the large Booster tent was suddenly not available and it was decided to wait and see if there were funds in the budget to cover such an expense. Barbara has contacted the School District about the reader boards and will speak to Brenda Crosby about keys and storing tables at the old Post Office. Gloria mentioned the need to ask contributors who had donated for banners if they wanted their money back since we weren’t making small banners.
Winter Art Exhibition: The Estacada Community Center has been identified as the venue.
Outreach: Gloria attended Chamber and Kiwanis meetings and reported to them on the Summer Celebration. She learned that Dianna Turk of the Parks and Recreation Committee is writing a grant for a pocket park. Gloria will invite her to the next Arts Commission meeting so we can talk about ways we can work together. Norma is interested in working on a subcommittee on grants.
A.R.T. grant: Jane reported that she had received a phone call from Kate Hawke of Artist Repertory Theater. They recently received a National Endowment for the Arts Arts Access Grant to work in isolated rural, at risk or incarcerated communities. She thought of us for one of the three projects (rural). ART would come on-site over a 3-month period to work with a community-defined project to create theater, providing training and workshops in simple set design, P.R., etc., that will leave a community with a blueprint on how to produce theater. Jane called Gary Lewis (vice-principal of the High School, Estacada Together member, and active with at-risk kids at the Cone) to see what he thought and he liked the idea. This fits the commission’s new role as a facilitator/connector rather than a producer of events. It was moved and approved that the Estacada Arts Commission would pursue A.R.T.’s proposal for the Art Access Grant in Estacada. Jane will call Kate Hawke.
Mission Statement Revision: A lively, word-smithing discussion was transpired as we tried to define our metaphors. We like sparks, perhaps “generating sparks that ….”
Also liked: “EAC is committed to connecting, promotion, inspiring and facilitating….”
Stay tuned; this is a work in progress.
New Business: Jane will call Brent Dodrill of Estacada Together to find a convenient day for him to meet with us to debrief the Summer Celebration. We also developed a list of evaluation questions to ask attendees at the event: Where do you live? How did you hear about this event? What suggestions do you have for future arts events? What did you enjoy most? Do you want to be included on our mailing list?
The meeting adjourned at 8:45.
Respectfully submitted,
Jane Reid
